A truck unloads and becomes empty in Lyon on Thursday. There are a few loads available in the area. Deciding which one to take is a judgement call about rate, empty kilometres, driver hours remaining, and where the truck ends up afterwards.
The usual shortcut is to take the nearest load. But proximity does not guarantee profit. A load 80 kilometres away on a poor rate can be worth less than a load 300 kilometres away that pays properly and leads your truck to an area with available outbound freight, so your driver does not end up in the “desert”.
