How Speedy took linehaul utilisation from 72% to 82%
Speedy – DPD’s Bulgarian network – runs more than 700 vehicles, ten hubs and over 100 inter-hub truck lines. With Transmetrics forecasting and optimisation, now NetMetrics, its linehaul team plans capacity weeks ahead instead of ordering trucks at the last minute: utilisation rose from 72% to above 82%, and total costs fell by an estimated 7-9%.
Growth outran the planning.
The e-commerce boom kept pushing volumes up, and growth amplified three familiar problems. Seasonal peaks were nearly impossible to prepare for, so trucks were ordered at the last moment – expensive, and sometimes not available at all. The loading factor was estimated by the loading staff, not measured. And costs could not be assigned to customers, so pricing ran on averages.
Three years of data, one forecast per lane.
Transmetrics started with the data: three years of shipment scans, cleaned and restructured. On that foundation it built a granular demand forecast for every hub pair, weeks ahead, and a capacity plan that shows the cheapest way to move the predicted volumes – and which departures are safe to cancel without touching delivery performance. This is the engine that became NetMetrics.
Utilisation up ten points, hub-to-hub costs down a quarter.
Persistently empty or half-empty trucks were identified and cancelled, cutting hub-to-hub costs by 25%. Fleet utilisation rose from 72% to above 82%, and Speedy estimates the total cost reduction at 7-9%, with planning decisions now taken weeks in advance.
How the data was cleaned, how the forecast and the capacity plan are built, and what changed in Speedy’s daily planning are in the full case study.
